Word processors

Topics: Microsoft Word; Scrivener

Microsoft Word isn’t the only game in town when it comes to word processors. Several academic-oriented options exist.

Composition tools
  • Scrivener: designed for long-form writing

  • Hemingway Editor: This website checks your text for readability. It warns you if you are being too verbose or your sentences are too long. Use it as a good guideline, without relying on it too heavily.

  • Microsoft Word: popular—ubiquitous, almost—but not always the best tool.

  • Manuscripts

  • Authorea: Billed as ‘Google Docs for scientists’, automatic journal submission.
